The Christmas Story: The Shepherd's Story

On Thursday we read the scriptures that tell of the birth of Jesus Christ. Once Jesus was born, God wanted everyone to know about it, and so He chose some unexpected messengers to share the Good News with everyone.

Their story...the shepherd's story is told in Luke 2:8-20:

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Today's part of the story is another one of those "can you even imagine?" moments. I certainly cannot. What a complete shock this must have been for the shepherds! They had no idea God was going to choose them to be Jesus' first visitors and the ones to share this amazing news with everyone!

This passage is a wonderful reminder that God loves to give everyone an opportunity to share about his great love. It doesn't matter who you are or what you are doing in life. When baby Jesus was born, all were welcome to worship him...from kings to shepherds. Everyone was and is given the opportunity to believe in Jesus as the Messiah.

When the shepherds were given the opportunity they immediately went to worship Jesus and then they just had to share this amazing news with everyone they could! Can you picture them running around town...arms waving excitedly as they tell this incredible story of angels, a manger, and a little tiny baby born to be the Savior?

Oh what a glorious site they saw out in the fields and then an even more glorious site once they arrived at the manger. And God chose be his messengers.

Does this make you think of what God has chosen you to do? It makes me think of what opportunities He has offered to me...especially when it comes to sharing the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.

I want to be like the shepherds. I want to be filled with excitement and obedience to God. I want to share the good news!

So tonight, I want you to know that Jesus was a real baby born to be a real savior. Believe.

I believe it. And like the shepherds, I too glorify and praise God for this most wonderful Christmas gift.
